Movies I Watched During Quarantine | Reviews
I’ve been doing a lot of random things to fulfill my interests and boredom during these unprecedented times— and of course movies is one way to kill time and keep me entertained. It’s now the end of July 2020, and I’m still in quarantine so this list may grow… but here are the movies I watched, and a brutally honest, quick review of each.
Tip: By the way, I’ve been watching these movies through an app called Watched. I found this app on TikTok, and it has basically every movie and show to watch, and it’s free. It’s such a good app. If you do use it, type in Huhu.to (where it says Enter URL) to access everything!
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
Rating & Review 7.5/10
This film is about a young boy who’s bitten by the same spider Peter Parker was bitten by, and uses those powers to fight evil alongside others. Really good music and animation, and decent storyline. For the first half, I remember thinking this was movie was really good… but then it got repetitive when met with different versions of Spider Man in the alternative universe—that’s when I switched from thinking the movie was really good to alright. Still a decent movie to watch otherwise.
Joker (2019)
Rating & Review: 7/10
Outstanding performance by Joaquin Phoenix. So much so, I feel like his performance was unmatched with the lackluster storyline. It fully makes sense why Phoenix won the Academy Award for Best Actor as the Joker, but why the film itself did not win Best Picture (won by Parasite, 2019). When the movie ended, I said, “That’s it!?”. Okay movie overall, left feeling disappointed.
Itaewon Class (2020)
Rating & Review: 6/10
This was my first Korean Drama to watch. It’s about a man who is determined to avenge an unjust death through the success of his restaurant. It's ehhhh…definitely binge worthy, and leaves you curious to know what happens next, but it was a bit too cheesy for me. Some episodes and characters were not necessary. Admittedly, I fast-forwarded through many unnecessary scenes. I do not think it’s worth watching, and I question anyone who recommends this 😂.
The King of Staten Island (2020)
Rating & Review: 8/10
I love any movie directed by Judd Apatow. It’s realistic, slow yet relatable, and filled with a lot of Pete Davidson’s dark humor. It showcases a side of mental health and the struggles Pete Davidson faces to find his way through life. Pete Davidson did a good job acting as himself, and it was just a good movie to watch late at night.
Frozen II (2019)
Rating & Review: 5/10
I feel weird giving such an iconic film a low rating, but I’ll be honest. This film just wasn’t for me. Perhaps musicals are not my thing; I couldn’t sit through the songs, and I could only vaguely remember what the storyline was because I was not intrigued. I feel the same way with the first Frozen.
Jojo Rabbit (2019)
Rating & Review: 9/10
Haha! This is a movie I will remember. It’s funny, different, and deep. The story revolved around World War II but it’s far from a war movie. It focuses on this little boy (acted by Roman Griffin Davis— he did a phenomenal job) who is fascinated with Nazi propaganda, to only realize that his mother is hiding a Jew. It’s a witty, comedic movie with some dark twists to it. I loved it, and I recommend you to watch it!
Richie Rich (1994)
Rating & Review: 7/10
This film is about a rich boy who wishes to do normal stuff, and of course he runs into trouble (as all movies with Macaulay Culkin do). It’s just an easygoing, wholesome movie to watch right before you doze off. In other words, you can relax a bit and not be glued to the TV. Nothing special, but just a film to watch perhaps before bed, as you scroll through your phone.
Crash Landing on You (2019)
Rating & Review: 9/10
This drama made me realize why people love Korean dramas. This drama is about a successful South Korean business women who accidentally ends up in North Korea, and a North Korean soldier helping her get out. This is a romantic comedy drama that is unrealistic, yet endearing. It has the perfect balance of comedy, action, and a well thought-out storyline. The actors all did an amazing job. It’s bingeworthy, and full of cliffhangers. I definitely recommend watching this esp. as your first Korean drama if you haven’t given Korean dramas a chance yet.
And that’s all my quick & honest reviews of each movie. Take it with a grain of salt, I’m a critical one (but you know if I really recommend a movie, it’s going to be really good). The last movie that I rated 10/10 is Parasite (2019). You can read my review here.
Other movies and shows I enjoy that come to my mind are: Get Out (2017), Baby Driver (2017), and Freaks and Geeks (1999-2000), if you’re wanting to watch something.
What have you watched and what’s your take on them? Let me know!
I recently got double eyelid surgery or "Asian blepharoplasty" in Korea. Specifically, I got ptosis correction (medical), double eyelid surgery (cosmetic), and epicanthoplasty (cosmetic). Here’s how it went down.
